Waiting for Gourdough
I am a glutton and I heart doughnuts. If ever I allow myself one, I crave them for a week. So when my good friend Randy told me of a magical trailer in Austin, Texas that creates exotic doughnuts, I knew I was in trouble.
“It’s called Gourdough’s,” Randy said. “G-O-U-R, like gourmet, and ‘dough’ like doughnut.” Doughnuts out of a trailer? Works for me!
I googled it as soon as I got to the office and made a mental note of the address: 1219 S. Lamar. Then I perused their menu, planning my attack. The Miss Shortcake first caught my eye, then Bring the Heath. But I was not prepared for the Razzle Dazzle.
Not the most novel creation, the Razzle Dazzle is basically covered with two of my favorite toppings: chocolate and raspberry. But it’s twice the size of a normal doughnut with double the topping, and worth every cent of the $3.50 it cost to pleasure my taste buds.
Shane opted for The Puddin’, a cream-filled, cream-cheese-covered doughnut smeared with banana and vanilla wafers. I took a bite (of course) and it was delectable.
Right before Shane’s doughnut came out, I snapped a shot of Mr. Doughnut Genius perfecting his confection.
A few final notes about our excursion:
- If you have a friend and can agree on a flavor, there is no reason why any person should ever consume an entire doughnut by himself.
- BUT, unless you live in Austin and can eat doughnuts every day, don’t compromise on flavor. Get the one you really want.
- These doughnuts are made fresh to order and are worth waiting in the rain for. They have tables with umbrellas outside the trailer. So don’t be deterred by bad weather.
- Get some milk to go along with it. You will need something to wash it down.

A few shots from our excursions thus far. Kind of depressing that I don’t already have more pictures. Ah well.
